The World : Lebanese OK Peace Talks

Lebanese Christian and Muslim leaders agreed to a national reconciliation dialogue in a new bid to end Lebanon’s 11-year-old civil war. All 10 members of Premier Rashid Karami’s half-Christian, half-Muslim Cabinet, which has not met in a year, agreed to hold the opening session of the peace talks next Tuesday at the closed Beirut race track in the no-man’s land of the Green Line dividing the capital into Muslim and Christian sectors. The Christian conferees issued an appeal for a cease-fire as a prelude to the dialogue, and Shia Muslim militia chieftain Nabih Berri declared his willingness to abide by a truce if other factions do.
