A Gardena man was arrested on suspicion of kidnaping when a California Highway Patrol officer, making a routine stop, found an 8-year-old boy in the suspect’s car--with his hands tied. The CHP said Thomas Bennett, 34, was stopped for speeding near a Norwalk off-ramp of the 605 Freeway by officers who discovered the boy sitting in the front seat. When officers asked why his hands were tied in front of him with a bandanna, he told them he did not know how he got into the man’s car and was tied up when he tried to escape. Sheriff’s deputies went to the boy’s home in Pico Rivera, where his foster parents said they thought that he was asleep in his room. Bennett, a carpenter, was booked on suspicion of burglary as well as kidnaping.
