Alaska’s Augustine Volcano is continuing to erupt, producing a vigorous plume of ash, and small earthquakes too numerous to count are rocking the 4,025-foot island volcano 180 miles southwest of Anchorage, a scientist said. Coast Guard officials issued a warning to mariners to stay away from the uninhabited Cook Inlet island because “hot gas clouds from an eruption may burn vessels and endanger lives within seven miles of the volcano,” Chief Petty Officer Bill Rice said. Pilots were warned to fly no closer than five miles.
