Guard Derek Smith, traded from the Clippers to Sacramento Kings Tuesday, filed a $250,000 grievance against the Clippers with the NBA Players Assn. in a dispute over a performance bonus.
Smith’s contract called for him to receive a $250,000 bonus if he played 2,000 minutes. Smith didn’t play 2,000 minutes. He played in the club’s first 11 games, then suffered a knee injury and contracted a rare form of mononucleosis that kept him out for the rest of the season.
However, Smith and his agent, Ron Grinker, maintain that the Clippers agreed to revise the contract. Clipper President Alan Rothenberg has said that although the matter was discussed, it was never put into writing.
