The president of the American Bar Assn., Eugene Thomas, said advertising by lawyers is here to stay, but the ABA will work to eliminate ads that hustle or deceive the public. Delegates to the ABA’s annual convention in New York, which ended Wednesday, overwhelmingly said they support advertising by lawyers, which was sanctioned by the Supreme Court in 1977. A majority also disagreed with retiring Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, who said in his farewell speech to the ABA that improper advertising has done serious damage to the profession.
