Southland horseplayers will have three choices starting today, when a 45-day/night harness racing season opens at Los Alamitos, joining ongoing meetings involving quarter horses at Hollywood Park and thoroughbreds at Del Mar.
The Los Alamitos harness meeting will have a 2 p.m. post time on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 7, with Friday’s cards starting at 4:30 p.m. From Sept. 9 through the end of the season on Oct. 11, there will be racing at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays.
Today’s opening feature on a 10-race program is an invitational for trotters worth $12,200.
Los Alamitos will offer more than $1.5 million in purses for stakes and feature races, about one-fifth of that money being offered in the estimated $313,000 Breeders’ Crown Championship for older male pacers on Oct. 10.
