Louisiana Gov. Edwin W. Edwards urged the nation’s legislators to push for an import tax on oil or face almost total dependence on foreign sources. Edwards, addressing the National Conference of State Legislatures in New Orleans, said oil-producing states have been financially devastated by the low price of oil. For each dollar drop in the price of a barrel of oil, Louisiana loses roughly $50 million, he said.
