A Westminster man was arrested by Irvine police and charged with spouse beating and assaulting police officers in connection with a marital spat of two newlyweds late Sunday on the San Diego Freeway, a police spokesman said.
Lt. Robert Leonard said that officers responded to a call shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday in which a man was allegedly beating a woman near the Jeffrey Road offramp.
He said the officers found Gary Briggs, 21, yelling at his wife, Danett Goldsmith, 19. The couple were married over the weekend.
Leonard said that Briggs threatened to assault the officers before fleeing on foot. After a half-mile chase, the man picked up an iron fence post and swung at the officers before he was bitten by a police dog and subdued, Leonard said.
Briggs was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of spouse beating and assaulting a police officer.
