Carlsbad
Lorenza Campos Contreras, 69, of Carlsbad, was killed when the car in which she was riding hit a Caltrans garbage truck parked on the shoulder of northbound Interstate 5 near Las Flores Drive in Carlsbad Wednesday morning.
The California Highway Patrol said the car’s driver, Maria Ascencio, 29, of Carlsbad, lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tractor-trailer truck before veering into the Caltrans truck. No one was in the Caltrans truck, and the driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed.
Ascencio and her 4-year-old daughter, Raina, were treated for minor injuries at Tri-City Hospital. Contreras was pronounced dead at the scene.
