BACH: SONATAS AND PARTITAS FOR SOLO VIOLIN....
BACH: SONATAS AND PARTITAS FOR SOLO VIOLIN. Shlomo Mintz, violin. Two Deutsche Grammophon Compact Discs 413 810. BACH: UNACCOMPANIED SUITES FOR CELLO. Lynn Harrell, cello. Two London Compact Discs 414-163. These two players are masters of their instruments, making rich and vibrant sounds that are perfectly reproduced on these brilliant CDs. Mintz displays a powerful virtuosity and a rubato that should thrill even the most cynical of listeners. If his performances just miss the mature reflection of violinists three times his age (Nathan Milstein, for example), no matter. Few violinists of any age can match his vigorous performances. Harrell’s performances are stunning as his full-bodied sound attacks every nuance of Bach’s cello suites.
