The small central Oregon town of Antelope, taken over for four years by followers of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, celebrated its new freedom with speeches and tears. “It was like living in a police state,” one longtime resident said when about 250 people gathered to dedicate a new monument marking the town’s release from the political rule of the Rajneeshees. The monument depicts a bronzed life-size antelope in mid-stride and a plaque includes a quotation by the 18th Century Irish statesman Edmund Burke: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
