A UCLA engineering professor has received a $225,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to conduct research in Mexico City on the Sept. 19, 1985, earthquake there.

Assistant Prof. Guy Felio of UCLA’s department of civil engineering will conduct field tests to determine what led to the collapse of more than 400 buildings in the quake, which measured 8.1 on the Richter scale.

Many of the damaged or destroyed buildings rested on long, heavy piles driven into the ground and Felio plans to study this aspect of the structural failures, officials said.

Felio also will study the clay soil underlying Mexico City.
