CONCERTS APLENTY : JULY 4TH IS DAY TO LET MUSIC RING

Many local Independence Day programs will sound a celebration of liberty theme this year, reflecting the centennial festivities honoring the refurbished Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in New York.

The following roundup of concerts--including many free events--lists the many opportunities awaiting the outdoor music lover during the holiday weekend and far beyond.

Fourth of July activities include:

- City of Brea Celebration of Liberty--All-day fair and entertainment at City Hall Park, 401 S. Brea Blvd., with fireworks at 9 p.m. at Brea-Olinda High School Stadium, 800 E. Birch St. (Tickets, $4.) For further information, call (714) 990-7735.

- Fanfare for Liberty--Fullerton College Community Band, directed by Larry Lowder, will perform at 8 p.m. in Pearson Park, corner of Harbor Boulevard and Sycamore Street, Anaheim. Starlight Specials and Music Under the Stars continue at the park nightly through Aug. 9, with acts including Panache, Americana, Anaheim Community Band, Make-a-Circus, Huntington Beach Community Band, Santa Ana Winds Youth Band, Anaheim Community Band Jazz Ensemble, Lois Ellyn Youth Ballet and Sunshine Steel Band. - Salute to Liberty--UC Irvine Concerts Under the Stars at 8 p.m. in Aldrich Park, UCI campus, with Tony Bennett and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band; fireworks. Remaining concerts are at 8 p.m. on Thursdays through Aug. 14. (Preconcert entertainment by local groups begins at 6.) Performers include Tex Beneke and his Orchestra, Diane Schuur, Woody Herman and His Young Thundering Herd, the Ritz, Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughan, Al Hirt and Ray Charles. Admission is free. - Fountain Valley Fiesta--all-day entertainment and contests will begin at 11 a.m., at Mile Square Park, Brookhurst Street and Heil Avenue. Fireworks will be set off at 9 p.m. Festivities continue through July 6, with the Kingston Trio performing at 7:30 p.m. on July 5. For information, call (714) 962-4441.

- South Coast Symphony Pops Concert--Larry Granger conducts Sousa marches, music from MGM musicals and Disney films, Tchaikovsky’s “1812†Overture--with fireworks--and other light classical and patriotic favorites at 7:30 p.m. in the Orange Coast College stadium in Costa Mesa. “Celebration,†a choir of young people, ages 7 to 17, will sing a preconcert medley of American songs at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Child Abuse Council of Orange County. Other outdoor arenas offering concerts throughout the summer include:

- Buena Park Recreation Center presents free Wednesday concerts at 7:30 p.m., July 9 through Aug 6. Acts include Howard Reynolds’ Big Band Sound, Society for the Preservation of Big Bands, South Coast Trio, Mississippi Mudders with Frank Amoss, Dixieland Band, Not-So-Finicky Band and the Stardust Big Band. - Golden West College offers free outdoor concerts in the college amphitheater on Sundays from 5 to 7 p.m. Ensembles include the Shy Dixie Band, Blue Knights, Big Band Commotion and the Huntington Beach Concert Band. The series runs June 29 to July 27. For information, call (714) 891-3991.

- Laguna Hills’ Oakbrook Village will present two-hour concerts under the clock tower on Fridays at 7 p.m. The six concerts will feature Frank Amoss and the Mississippi Mudders, Ed Leach’s Big Swing Band, Roberta Lynn, Orange County Rhythm Machine, Uptown Sax Quintette and the Irvine Symphony. Admission is free.
