Heike Drechsler of East Germany tied the world record of 21.71 seconds in the women’s 200 meters in the East German Track and Field Championships at Jena, East Germany.
The record was set by Marita Koch, also of East Germany, in 1979 and equaled by Koch in 1984.
It was Drechsler’s second world-record performance in two weeks. On June 21, she set a world record in the long jump of 24 feet 5 1/2 inches.
