Six San Diegans Reach Final Preliminaries of Pro Surfing Contest
OCEANSIDE — Mike Lambresi, of Oceanside, and five other San Diego County surfers have advanced to the final round of preliminary heats of the second $5,000 Aloe-Up Cup at Harbor Beach, the fourth stop on the U.S. Pro Tour of Surfing.
Phil Treibel and Chris Adams, both of Carlsbad, Chris Menzie and Danny Conner, both of San Diego, and Rick Lasch of Del Mar also advanced to today’s round.
The top 16 amateurs from today’s final preliminaries will meet the top 16 professionals for the $1,500 first prize. David Barr, No. 3 on the tour, Jim Palmer and Lonny Brothers are the top professionals contending for the title. Top-ranked Brian McNulty and second-ranked Paul Barr, will not compete as scheduled because they are in a World Circuit event in South Africa.
Competition will begin at 6:30 a.m., and the finals will start at 2 p.m. The finals of the first Morey Boogie Oceanside Classic also will be at 2 p.m.
