McMullen’s Home Run Gives Former Angels Tie With Old-Timers

Before a couple of old-timers named Don Sutton and Phil Niekro set out to duel on the pitcher’s mound Saturday night, a group of former Angels played a team of former major league all-stars to a 2-2 tie in the Angels’ annual old-timers’ game.

Ken McMullen, who played third base for the Angels from 1970 to 1972, hit a two-run home run off Bob Gibson, striking the screen on the left-field foul pole. But Geoff Zahn, an old-timer for less than six months, allowed the all-stars to tie the score by surrendering consecutive doubles to Randy Hundley, Tom Tresh and Ernie Banks in the third inning.

The game, which was called after 4 1/2 innings, featured three old-timers younger than either Sutton (41) or Niekro (48)--Zahn (39), Jay Johnstone (39) and Bobby Bonds (40).

Others who made appearances included 363-game winner Warren Spahn, Willie Davis, Luis Tiant, Curt Flood, Tommy Davis, Orlando Cepeda and current Angel first base coach Bobby Knoop.
