Baroncello, ridden by Chris McCarron, rallied through the stretch Friday and won the $23,000 feature race for older horses by a head on the grass at Hollywood Park.
The favorite, Lord Grundy, ridden by Fernando Toro, finished second, 1 3/4 lengths in front of Crony, ridden by Laffit Pincay, in a field of six horses, 3 years old and up.
Baroncello, who earned $12,650 for the victory, was clocked in 1:47 for 1 1/8 miles over a firm turf course.
Sent off as the third choice, Baroncello paid $13.80, $3.80 and $2.60. Lord Grundy, the 11-10 favorite, returned $2.60 and $2.20, and Crony paid $2.80 to show.
Carrying highweight of 122 pounds, Baroncello got through along the rail in the upper stretch and outfinished Lord Grundy after a tough stretch battle. Lord Grundy carried 116 pounds.
Crony, carrying 116, led from the outset but faltered in the final furlong.
