Whites Reportedly Abduct Black Editor in Soweto

LONDON — The National Union of Journalists said Friday that it has received reports that four armed white vigilantes abducted prominent black journalist Zwelakhe Sisulu from his home in Soweto, near Johannesburg, in South Africa.
Sisulu, 36, is editor of the New Nation newspaper and son of jailed African National Congress leader Walter Sisulu.
“It begins to look as if Mr. Botha’s government is going down the road of death squads,” said Harry Conroy, general secretary of the 33,000-member union. He referred to South African President Pieter W. Botha.
Sisulu’s newspaper is a politically outspoken bi-monthly funded mainly by the Roman Catholic Church and aimed primarily at blacks.
