400 in Brazil Reported Injured by Fireworks

RIO DE JANEIRO — More than 400 people were injured this week in Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia in fireworks battles that form part of traditional June celebrations, the Estado de Sao Paulo news agency said Thursday.
The injured included eight hospitalized in serious condition and numerous children who lost hands and fingers in fights in which where participants aim fireworks at each other, the agency said. The festivites, in honor of Saints Anthony, John and Paul, run through June into early July.
