Motorola Inc., Schaumburg, Ill., announced Thursday that Robert W. Galvin, chairman and chief executive for the last 22 years, will step down as CEO on Tuesday as a two-step management succession plan is put in place.
William J. Weisz, 59, currently vice chairman and chief operating officer, will become chief executive in addition to his current title, effective July 1. When the second phase of the restructuring takes effect Jan. 1, 1988, Weisz will become “officer of the board” and vice chairman, Motorola said.
John F. Mitchell, 58, president and assistant chief operating officer, becomes president and chief operating officer until 1988, when he also will become officer of the board and vice chairman.
“The prime objective of these changes is to put key officials in place for the next generation of corporate leadership,” Galvin said. “Each of these officers has demonstrated a capacity to lead over many years of service. It is a superb team.”
