Opposition Leads Poll in Trinidad and Tobago

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago —  Six out of every ten voters interviewed in a poll say they would favor a change of government in Trinidad and Tobago if elections were held, the Express newspaper said.

The results of the poll seem to reflect growing dissatisfaction with the economy in the oil-rich, twin-island nation of 1.2 million people.

Forty-three percent of those surveyed in the poll, taken in May, said they would vote for the opposition National Alliance for Reconstruction, and 20% said they would vote for the ruling People’s National Movement, which has been in power for nearly three decades.

The National Alliance for Reconstructiton, a coalition of opposition parties formed ten months ago, is posing the most serious challenge to the People’s National Movement, led by Prime Minister George Chambers.
