American League Roundup : Yankees Turn Tables on the Red Sox With 11-3 Victory at Boston

Mike Pagliarulo hit a two-run homer and drove home three runs Monday night at Boston to pace a 19-hit attack and lead the New York Yankees to an 11-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Dave Winfield, Mike Easler and Don Mattingly also had three hits apiece for the Yankees, who defeated Boston after dropping three straight to the Red Sox last week at New York.

New York right-hander Brian Fisher (4-3) blanked the Red Sox on one hit over 3 innings of relief to get the victory. The Yankees pounded Boston starter and loser Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd (9-5) for five runs and 11 hits over 4 innings.

New York put the game away with four runs in the seventh inning. Winfield, 2 for 27 entering the game, hit a two-run single with the bases loaded off reliever Mike Trujillo to give the Yankees a 9-3 lead. Pagliarulo followed with a run-scoring ground-rule double to make it 10-3 and move Winfield to third. Butch Wynegar hit a sacrifice fly to score Winfield.

Four pitchers allowed a season-high 11 walks for the Red Sox.

Milwaukee 5, Toronto 3--Cecil Cooper hit a two-run homer, and Ben Oglivie and Earnest Riles added run-scoring singles in a 13-hit Brewer attack at Toronto.

Danny Darwin (4-3) pitched 7 innings and gave up three runs on 10 hits. Darwin had lost three straight games against Toronto since May 1, 1984. Dan Plesac worked the final 1 innings for his sixth save.

The Blue Jays’ Dave Stieb (2-8) gave up five runs on 10 hits in seven innings. One of his five strikeouts was the 1,000th in the right-hander’s career.

The Brewers were leading, 3-2, when Cooper followed Robin Yount’s one-out double in the seventh with his sixth home run of the season.

Kansas City 6, Oakland 3--George Brett and Lonnie Smith drove in two runs apiece at Kansas City, handing the staggering A’s their 15th consecutive road defeat.

The A’s, with a 28-43 record, are four losses from the American League record for consecutive road defeats.

The Royals broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth when Buddy Biancalana hit a two-out single that pushed Steve Balboni, who had walked, to second. Willie Wilson followed with an infield single, loading the bases, then Doug Bair walked Smith to force in Balboni.

Brett followed with a double down the right-field line, driving home Biancalana and Wilson.

Danny Jackson (4-4) went six innings and gave up six hits for the victory. Steve Farr collected his fifth safe with three hitless innings.

Chicago 11, Minnesota 2--Greg Walker hit a grand slam homer and a run-scoring single and Ron Kittle homered twice, backing Joe Cowley’s two-hit pitching over eight innings at Chicago.

The victory was the third straight for the White Sox and second under Manager Jim Fregosi. It was the third straight loss for the Twins.

Cleveland 8, Seattle 6--Rookie Andy Allanson hit his first professional home run, a two-run shot, and fellow rookie Cory Snyder drove in four runs to lead the Indians past the Mariners at Seattle.

Allanson’s homer, which barely cleared the 349-foot mark in left field, a three-run double by Snyder and Tony Bernazard’s solo homer came in a six-run fourth inning that gave the Indians a 7-2 lead.

Allanson homered in his 1,026th professional at-bat, including 870 during a three-year career in the minors.
