When the Jim Henson/George Lucas/Tri-Star film “Labyrinth” hits the theaters Friday, don’t look for Elaine May’s name on the credits.

The prolific script doctor and sometime director likes to keep her surgeries quiet. But Terry Jones (of Monty Python fame), author of the original draft (based on a story by Henson and Dennis Lee), confirmed that May was called in to rewrite.

The fantasy’s about a teen-ager who searches for her baby brother in a labyrinth inhabited by a goblin king (David Bowie). Jones took only three weeks to knock out his version for Henson. But “we totally disagreed about what the story was about,” said Jones cheerfully--and May was summoned.
