Golf Roundup : Tewell Shoots a 64, Takes One-Shot Lead at Atlanta

Doug Tewell moved into a one-shot lead halfway through the $500,000 Georgia-Pacific Atlanta golf tournament by shooting an eight-under-par 64 Friday.

Tewell, who broke a six-year winless drought when he won the Los Angeles Open earlier this year, had a 132 total. Scott Hoch was at 133 after a 66.

First-day co-leader Hal Sutton followed his opening 66 with a 68 and was two shots back. Rick Fehr, who matched Sutton Thursday, slipped to a 74 and a 140 total.

Gary Koch had the best round of the day, a 63, and was three strokes off the pace.

Hollis Stacy and Patti Rizzo passed a faltering Laurie Rinker and shared the lead at 142 after two rounds of the the $255,000 Rochester International ladies tournament at Pittsford, N.Y.

Stacy bogeyed the first and last holes but still managed a 72, matching Rizzo, who also had two bogeys and two birdies in her round.

Judy Dickinson, who shot a 69, and Carolyn Hill, who had a 71, were tied at 143.

First-round leader Rinker shot a 75 after her opening 69 and was at 144.

Severiano Ballesteros of Spain battled winds that reached 50 m.p.h. to shoot a three-over-par 75 and take a two-stroke lead at 143 after two rounds of the $300,000 Irish Open at Portmarnock, Ireland.

Australian Wayne Riley (75), South African Hugh Baiocchi (76) and Briton Robert Lee (79) were tied for second place at 145.

Deane Beman, the U.S. PGA Tour commissioner, after 13 years away from competitive playing, made the cut with a 153 total after his round of 79.

Gary Player, spurred by a 158-yard 8-iron shot on the par-4 fourth hole that went into the cup for an eagle 2, shot a four-under-par 68 to share the first-round lead with Gay Brewer in the Senior Tournament Players Championship at Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland.
