Bells rang and boat horns blared in Little Rock, Ark., to mark 150 years of statehood, capping a weekend of celebrations here and in Michigan, which entered the union in tandem with Arkansas. Church bells across Arkansas rang on the hour through Sunday evening, marking June 15, 1836, when President Andrew Jackson signed papers making Arkansas the 25th state. It entered the union as a slave state, while Michigan, the 26th state, was free. In Little Rock, Gov. Bill Clinton cut a birthday cake, and in Lansing, Gov James J. Blanchard lit a torch signaling the beginning of Michigan’s 18-month observance.
