Nuclear Education a Good Idea

We suppose it’s as much a sign of the times as anything that the San Diego city schools are considering adding in all grade levels instruction on life in the nuclear age.

The subject matter covered would deal with both the peaceful and belligerent uses of nuclear power. A 25-member task force of school and community officials has recommended adoption of the “Nuclear Education Program,” and the school board will consider it on Tuesday.

Members of the task force, who ranged from retired Navy officers and members of nuclear disarmament groups, believe that issues such as the ramifications of nuclear war can be taught objectively.

We, too, recommend the program’s adoption because it would seek to foster among young people the thought that they don’t have to accept pessimistic views about the Earth’s future but rather they can help shape it.
