Westside Diamond Stars Will Sparkle in City-CIF Encounter

High school seniors from the Westside and the South Bay will play in an all-star baseball game matching a Los Angeles City team with its CIF-Southern Section counterpart at 7 p.m. Saturday at Santa Monica’s Clover Park, Ocean Park Boulevard and 27th Street.

About 6 p.m., there will be home-run hitting and base-running contests. Admission is free.

Coaches for the City team are University High’s Frank Cruz and Venice’s Jeff Shimizu. The CIF coaches are Tony Diaz of Santa Monica High and Bob Yarnell of St. Bernard.

Players from the City team include shortstop Chris Martin, third baseman Brent Turley and first baseman Mark Snanoudj , all of Hamilton High; catcher John Dolak, pitcher-outfielder Chris Forshner and third baseman Eric Beckerman, all of Palisades; and pitchers Charlie German and Ben Posen, shortstop Ross Rosenfeld, first baseman Mike Saltzman and outfielder John Beckerman (no relation to Eric) all of University.

Other City players are pitcher Armando Gomez, second baseman Will Galinato, pitcher Dwayne Lortie, catcher Bob Tomaselli and center fielder Richard Simpson, all of Venice, and second baseman Bill Amendola and outfielder Troy Brown, both of Westchester.

Those on the CIF roster include Windward pitcher Bentley Weber, Brentwood pitcher Marc Hamilton, St. Monica outfielder-pitcher George Padilla, outfielder Pat O’Hara, infielder Greg Lee and pitcher Greg Berlfein, all of Santa Monica, and outfielder David Barad, infielder Gregg Silver and pitcher Rob Kurtz, all of Beverly Hills.

Others are outfielder Rick Niles, infielder Billy Keep and infielder-pitcher Tim McDonnell, all of Culver City; catcher Cliff Hughes and infielder Jon Drimmer, both of Crossroads; and catcher Sean Corrigan, infielder Dan Cossettini, infielder Frank James and outfielder Ron Scotland, all of St. Bernard.
