Slumping Cubs Fire Jim Frey
Associated Press
CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs today fired Manager Jim Frey, after the team lost seven of its last 10 games, team President Dallas Green announced.
Green gave no further details, but team spokeswoman Sharon Pannozzo said third base coach Don Zimmer, a close friend of Frey, was also released. Frey led the Cubs to the 1984 National League East championship, but the club slumped to a 77-84 record last season and was just 23-33 this year, 16 1/2 games behind the division-leading New York Mets and in fifth place.
