Claremont : Rural-Zone Moratorium
Backing down from a Planning Commission recommendation for a complete building moratorium in Claremont’s “rural zone,” the City Council has voted to impose a moratorium only on subdivisions within the 594-acre district. The limited moratorium, passed as an interim urgency measure, does not affect existing requests to subdivide land and will not preclude new construction in the zone, said Sharon Wood, community development director.
Bounded roughly by Mt. Baldy Road on the north and northwest, Pomona Valley Protective Authority land on the east, and Pamello and Alamosa drives on the south and southwest, the zone is composed of about two-thirds developed land and about one-third vacant or agricultural land, Wood said. The measure--prompted by concerns that city building codes were not adequately protecting the rural district--will stay in effect for 45 days, after which the council can extend or revise the moratorium, she said.
