Didn’t Shave Points, Williams Says
John (Hot Rod) Williams, former Tulane University basketball star, said that he got $400 after one game that was allegedly fixed and $1,500 after another but didn’t know where the money had come from and hadn’t shaved any points to earn it.
Williams made his statements in a videotape made by the New Orleans district attorney’s office March 26, 1985, the night he was arrested on sports bribery charges.
The tape, played publicly for the first time Tuesday in Williams’ trial in Louisiana state court at New Orleans, ran for about 20 minutes. Most of it was devoted to questions and answers about alleged violations of NCAA rules--$10,000 in a shoe box to sign at Tulane and payments of about $100 a week to play.
Williams is charged with shaving points against Southern Mississippi on Feb. 2 last year and against Memphis State on Feb. 20. His first trial ended abruptly in a mistrial last August before the prosecution got to play the videotape.
