Israel to Build Disputed Fighter

TEL AVIV — Despite U.S. threats that it won’t fund it, Israel will press ahead with a multibillion-dollar project to build its own Lavi fighter aircraft, a defense official said today.
“The program will continue and we are proceeding with it as usual,” said Gen. Menachem Eini, who heads the project largely funded by Washington. Israeli defense sources had said the United States wants Israel to buy U.S. F-16 or F-20 warplanes instead of producing the Lavi, whose cost American officials believe Israel has seriously underestimated.
