A Navy parachutist died Sunday afternoon when he jumped from a plane at 15,000 feet and his chute failed to open southeast of Brown Field, a Navy spokeswoman said.
The 24-year-old victim, whose identity was not released pending notification of relatives, was a student with the Naval Special Warfare Center and was attending a basic underwater demolitions school at the Naval Amphibious Base at Coronado.
He was jumping from an Air Force C-130 at 3:15 p.m. over a drop site at Alta Road about two miles south of Otay Mesa Road, spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Connie Haney said.
For unknown reasons his first chute did not open and the reserve chute did not open until the victim was 100 feet from the ground, she said.
