A Swedish patrol ship dropped anti-submarine charges after suspecting foreign submarine activity in Swedish waters Friday, a Defense Ministry spokesman said.

He said the ship was taking part in an exercise in the Baltic archipelago off Stockholm.

“We are not sure there is a submarine down there but we thought it wise to take action first and analyze results later,” he said.

In 1981, a Soviet Whisky-class submarine ran aground off Karlskrona naval base in southeastern Sweden, an incident which Moscow blamed on a navigational error.
