Newport Beach : Man Dies of Injuries From Collision of Bikes
A 56-year-old bicyclist who was injured May 11 in a freak collision with another bicycle rider died this week of his injuries, Newport Beach police reported.
The victim, Yasuo Shiki, a native of Japan who lived in Irvine, died Wednesday at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where he had been unconscious with a head injury since the accident, Investigator Mark Fisher said.
Fisher said Shiki was riding a three-speed bicycle on Back Bay Road near Eastbluff Drive in Newport Beach on May 11. Shiki was going downhill, at about 20 to 25 m.p.h., when he saw another bicycle rider approaching, Fisher said. “The two riders swerved, but they swerved into each other,” he said.
The other bicycle rider, Dion Reid, 59, of Garden Grove, escaped with minor abrasions, Fisher said. Shiki struck his head against a curb and suffered massive injuries, Fisher said.
