Ron Lee of Bakersfield College and Debra Larsen of Cal Poly Pomona this week were named the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.’s athletes of the year by the conference’s sports information directors.

Lee was NCAA Division II champion in the high jump and the 110-meter high hurdles. Larsen, who played on Pomona’s national champion basketball team, was also a national champion in the heptathlon.

CSUN’s Jeff Kubiak, an All-American swimmer, was seventh in the men’s voting. Barbara Jordan, an All-American center fielder on CSUN’s CCAA-champion softball team, was fifth in the women’s voting.

Reggie Smith Jr. of Montclair Prep High has been named most valuable player in the Alpha League in baseball. Smith, a senior, batted .342 with five home runs and was 4-0 with an 0.64 earned-run average for the Mounties.

Bob Hendricks has resigned as baseball coach at Newbury Park High. Hendricks, who took the job in 1980, will remain at the school as a driver education teacher.

Jim Zimmer, middle distance runner at Simi Valley High, signed a letter of intent Tuesday to attend Fresno State in the fall. Zimmer, who has qualified for this weekend’s state track and field finals at Cerritos College, will join former Simi Valley teammate Lawrence Nelson at Fresno State. Nelson, last year’s state high school long jump champion, was named Fresno State’s freshman track athlete of the year this spring.

Eight members of the Simi Valley High baseball team have been selected to play in all-star games this weekend. Pitcher Scott Radinsky, infielders Mike Hankins and Dave Milstien and outfielder-pitcher Shaun Murphy were selected to the South squad for the state all-star series to be played Friday through Sunday in Stockton. Pitcher Todd Sullivan, infielder Von Herron and outfielders Corey Aurand and Duane Mulville will play in the Ventura County all-star game Saturday at Camino Real Park in Ventura at 7 p.m.

Glen Steurer of Simi Valley placed 10th behind winner Darrell Waltrip in NASCAR’s Budweiser 400 at Riverside International Raceway on Sunday to finish best among NASCAR Winston West drivers.

Winston West point-leader Jim Robinson of Reseda finished 15th. The finish moved Steurer into a third-place tie in the points race with Bill Schmitt of Redding.
