City Fees for Film Makers

Avalon: $93.75 annual business license; $100 per day on public property; $15 yearly for vehicles under 20 feet, $46.50 for vehicles over 20 feet; recently filmed: “Airwolf,” “General Hospital.”

Carson: $12.50 per day per film employee, minimum of $62.50 per day; two years since any filming in the city.

El Segundo: $100 application fee, $50 per day; recently filmed: “Soul Man,” “Morning Star, Evening Star.”

Gardena: $200 for the first day, $100 each additional day; no filming since Jan. 1.

Hawthorne: $30 business-tax certificate; $150 for first camera used, $50 for each additional camera; $1 per day per film employee; $20 per day per vehicle; recently filmed: “Insiders,” “Copacabana.”

Hermosa Beach: $1,000 per day outside and on public streets; $500 per day inside; recently filmed: “Calendar Girl Murders,” “T.J. Hooker.”

Inglewood: $25 permit; business tax for filming on private property, $40 for the first day, $20 each additional day; business tax on public property, $200 first day, $100 each additional day; location fee: $1,500 per day on public property, $800 per day on public rights of way; recently filmed: “Crazy Like a Fox,” “Knot’s Landing,” “Star Trek III” “Dynasty.”

Lawndale: $57.75 per day; $7.75 per day for first 10 film employees, $5.50 per day for 11th to 20th, $2.25 per day for each additional employee; searchlight fee of $11.50 per day; fees rising slightly July 1; no officials recall any filming in the city.

Lomita: $35 annual business license; some filming has been done, city officials said, but titles were not available.

Los Angeles: $115 permit fee; $200 per day for exterior shooting, $250 per day for interior shooting; dozens of television shows and films shot recently, officials say.

Manhattan Beach: $1,560 per day in most parts of the city, $2,015 in designated areas; recently filmed: “Against All Odds.”

Palos Verdes Estates: $534 per day in residential areas, $1,069 per day in commercial areas; recently filmed: “Blacke’s Magic.”

Rancho Palos Verdes: $500 per day; recently filmed: “Crazy Like a Fox,” “Thornbirds.”

Redondo Beach: $265 per day; productions include “Lifeguard,” “Riptide,” “The A-Team.”

Rolling Hills: Filming on public property is not allowed; no fee for filming on private property with owner’s consent; there has been no filming in the city.

Rolling Hills Estates: $500 per day on public property, $250 per day on private property; recently filmed: “Moonlighting.”

Torrance: $266 for the first day, $133 each additional day on public property; $116 for the first day, $28 each additional day on private property; recently filmed: “The Wild Life.”

- Most cities also require liability insurance, and require that police and other city personnel be hired by the film company as needed on an overtime basis.
