Podhoretz, Vidal Feud

Now that the Lakers have lost I can refocus my attention on the Podhoretz-Vidal duel being fought along the Eastern Seaboard. At least Powell had the courage to admit he lacked the interest, intellect and battle training to gut it out with either master of the sharp tongue, quick wit, and insufferable ego. On the other hand, Yoder shows frightening naivete and self-righteous indignation toward Podhoretz’s allegiance to a strong and viable Israel.

Vidal’s concern over the history of the American Civil War is commendable. More than just a memory of the past, it represents lessons for our future. The link to Israel for Podhoretz is also historical. More important, his connection is a vital sign of the flame that ignites Jewish cultural, spiritual, religious, and possibly physical survival.

What appears to Vidal as a masterful matching of wits in a war of words debate or to Yoder as a more-pro-Israeli-than-thou game, for Podhoretz is the lifeline that provides every Jew the strength and encouragement to be the best possible American. A strong Israel is good for America in and of itself. A strong Israel also assures a strong, vibrant, and forceful American-Jewish community, which only benefits our country.

Yes, I believe Israel can be wrong, as our own country is at times, and yes, constructive criticism is valid and welcomed. But, by confusing and equating the retelling of American history with the future of Jewish survival, Yoder’s and Vidal’s facades are undressed, leaving their biases and prejudices naked for all the world to see.
