Steffi Graf’s Win Streak Ends
PARIS — Defending champion Chris Evert Lloyd and 1981 winner Hana Mandlikova fought off a pair of teen-age challengers today to advance to the women’s semifinals at the French Open.
Lloyd, the No. 2 seed, struggled through the first set but came back to beat 18-year-old Carling Bassett of Canada 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Mandlikova also came back from a first-set loss to beat 16-year-old Steffi Graf of West Germany 2-6, 7-6, 6-1. That ended Graf’s 23-match winning streak that included four consecutive tournament championships and a semifinal victory over Mandlikova at Hilton Head, S.C.
