Palmdale Woman, Unborn Daughter Killed in 2-Car Crash
A 23-year-old mother and her unborn child were killed on Saturday and her 10-month-old son survived after the woman’s car was struck broadside by another car, authorities said Sunday.
Heidi M. Combs of Palmdale was taken to Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital in Newhall, where a stillborn girl was delivered. Combs died about five hours later, a spokesman for the hospital said.
Combs’ son, Jesse, received only minor injuries but remained in the hospital for observation.
The accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Placerita Canyon Road in Canyon Country, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Richard Perez.
Combs was driving on Sierra Highway when a car driven by a 17-year-old Valencia youth on Placerita Canyon Road apparently ran a red light and struck her car, Perez said.
The driver of the second car, Victor P. Aviles, was taken by ambulance to Mayo Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Aviles was not arrested and authorities were still investigating the crash, Perez said.
