Two Colleges Name Outstanding Citizens
Outstanding citizens have been named by two colleges administered by the Coast Community College District.
Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa named former athletic director Wendell Pickens the college’s Outstanding Citizen of 1986. Pickens founded the college’s athletic department in 1948 and served as athletic director until his retirement in 1977.
Pickens, who lives in Irvine, became the first retired faculty member, and also the first sports person, to receive the college’s Outstanding Citizen award.
Golden West College in Huntington Beach named Mary T. Boyce of Irvine its Outstanding Citizen of the year. Boyce is chairwoman of the Golden West College Foundation, which raises scholarship money. She is also active in Patrons of Golden West College and, as wife of the college’s founding president, R. Dudley Boyce, she was the college’s initial “first lady.”
