Local News in Brief : Boyfriend Seized as Woman’s Charred Remains Are Found
The charred remains of a 28-year-old Camarillo Heights woman were found in the ashes of her home Saturday after firefighters put out a blaze they believe was started in an attempt to hide her murder, police said Sunday.
Hours after Alicia Mayorga was found dead, police arrested her boyfriend, Gary John Botha, 38, of Oxnard on suspicion of murder.
According to police, Mayorga’s body was found in the kitchen of her home early Saturday morning after firefighters extinguished a fire that caused about $30,000 in damage to the residence.
An autopsy of the woman’s body reportedly showed that she had been strangled before the fire started.
A brief investigation led authorities to begin a search for Botha. He was later found near the Point Mugu Naval Station. Police said he offered no resistance to arrest.
