Hitachi Begins Production of VCRs at Its Anaheim Facility
Hitachi Ltd. said it began production Friday of videocassette recorders at its plant in Anaheim.
The Tokyo company said its initial goal is to produce 100,000 VCRs annually at the plant, which opened in 1982 and currently produces 200,000 television sets each year. As reported, Hitachi spent about $1.5 million in preparing the Anaheim facility for VCR production.
A company spokesman said Hitachi plans to expand VCR production in Anaheim “as soon as possible” and expects to double its 50-person VCR work force by next year.
Hitachi also said it plans to increase its purchases of U.S.-made components for the VCRs to 50% of the total content from the current 20% ratio.
Hitachi produces and sells $25 billion in electronic and electrical goods worldwide. The company produces about 4.5 million VCRs annually.
