Jeff Smith of Lakewood, Colo., and Mary Sperry of South Burlington, Vt., each earned $500,000 by winning the men’s and women’s division of the Super Run II 10-kilometer footrace at South Lake Tahoe. To qualify for the race, a runner had to have never competed in college or ever won any prize money.

Smith’s time was 30 minutes 52 seconds, while Sperry finished in a personal-best 35:48.
