UCLA has accumulated $400,000 in energy savings in the last year by substituting gas from a nearby landfill for natural gas to generate heat and hot water on its campus, reports Energy User News. Landfill gas--55% methane and 45% carbon dioxide--has been supplying more than one-third of the fuel used in UCLA’s main boiler room for more than two years, according to the energy journal. The campus heating system serves 150 buildings occupying one of the largest heating facilities in the nation. The gas comes from the Mountain Gate Landfill, located beneath a golf course about five miles north of the campus.
