Chapman Advances in NCAA Tennis Meet

Unseeded Chapman College upset No. 4-seeded Rollins College of Florida, 5-2, in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division II men’s team tennis tournament Monday at Cal State Northridge.

The victory sends Chapman (21-12), the defending national champion, into today’s semifinal match against No. 1-seeded UC Davis at 12:30 p.m. UC Davis defeated Tennessee Martin, 5-1, Monday.

“They’re seeded first and they ought to be,” Chapman Coach Mike Edles said. “We need a good performance out of our singles like we got today.”

Against Rollins College, Chapman received singles victories from Troy Turnbull, Paul Wekesa, John Kline and Brad Parker. Chapman clinched the victory when its No. 3 doubles team, Olivier Amerlick and Bis Houssels, defeated Kevin Copeland and Andy Platt, 6-3, 6-4.

Today’s other semifinal match will be between Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Hampton Institute of Virginia. San Luis Obispo defeated Stephen F. Austin of Texas, 5-4, while Hampton defeated Valdosta State of Georgia, 6-0.
