San Diego Track Roundup : Brian Boggess Throws Helix for a Loss, 69-67
Brian Boggess has been the highlight of the El Capitan High School boys’ track-and-field team all season. He has been the San Diego County leader and one of the state’s best in the shotput and discus.
Thursday, Boggess increased his best in the shotput with a toss of 59 feet, 9 inches and won the discus (170-0) as the Vaqueros beat Helix, 69-67, in a Grossmont League meet. Boggess’ previous best in the shot was 59-7.
But Dave Storm, El Capitan coach, said the mile relay, which decided the meet, was the day’s most exciting event.
Devon Winthrop trailed the Highlanders’ Jeff Exum by five yards as the teams entered the final leg. Exum led until Winthrop caught him with 50 yards to go. Storm said they were neck and neck until the tape, when Winthrop lunged forward for the victory. El Capitan’s time was 3:34.7.
In other San Diego County meets:
Grossmont 77, El Cajon 58--Darryl Ransom of Grossmont cleared 6-7 to win the high jump and become a legitimate challenger to county leader, Erik Peterson of Monte Vista, whose best is 6-8 1/2. Ransom, who also plays forward on the basketball team, did not compete in the high jump before this year. Ransom’s previous best was 6-4. After easily clearing 6-7, he moved the bar to 6-9 but failed on all three attempts. Ransom also won the long jump with a leap of 20-0.
Poway 71, Orange Glen 65--With the Titans trailing by 15 points, Doug Eagle won the intermediate hurdles in 41.2. After two straight victories, it came down to the triple jump, where Harold Jones jumped 39-6 to win the event and give the Titans the meet. Freshman Glen Reyes won the 100 meters (11.2), the 200 (22.7) and the long jump (20-7) for Orange Glen.
Southwest 69, Castle Park 67--The Raiders won the South Bay League title with a narrow victory in the mile relay. The Trojans’ Scooby Scott had won the 440 (53.6) earlier and was making his move on Rusty Berry after 330 yards in the relay. But Scott dropped the baton and the Raiders won in 3:35.0. Ron Hurdle won the 100 yards in 9.9 and the 220 (22.8). Southwest’s Mike Serrano won the pole vault at 14-0.
Crawford 98, San Diego 36--Damion Cormier won the 100 meters for Crawford with a time of 10.8. Keith Williams took first in the 220 yards with a time of 22.6. Cormier and Williams also were members of the Colts’ 440-yard relay team, which won in 43.2. Paul Franklin leaped 44-7 to win the triple jump.
