A Rome court today sentenced Italian film director Franco Zeffirelli to one year in prison and fined him $566,000 on charges of breaking foreign exchange regulations.

Zeffirelli, whose films include “Romeo and Juliet,†“Brother Sun, Sister Moon†and “Jesus of Nazareth,†was accused of illegally amassing capital abroad and holding a foreign currency account with a Rome bank between 1982 and 1985. The director’s lawyer, Gianrico Pittaluga, said Zeffirelli will remain free pending appeal.
