Four of the nation’s top high school soccer players--Lucas Martin of La Jolla High, Ray Fernandez of Torrance High, Billy Thompson of Mountain View St. Francis and Will Steadman of New Mexico’s Albuquerque Academy--are among athletes who have signed letters of intent with UCLA.
Martin was the San Diego CIF Section player of the year, Thompson won the similar honor in the Central Coast CIF Section, Fernandez was an All-CIF Southern Section selection and Steadman was Albuquerque’s top prep player. The Bruins are defending NCAA champions.
Other top athletes who signed with UCLA include swimmers Russell Granger and John Marion, gymnasts Terry Notary and Chris Waller, golfer Jane Zeidlitz and volleyball players Trevor Schirman and J.B. Saunders of Palisades High School. Saunders’ brother Dave was a UCLA All-American and a member of the gold medalist U.S. team in the 1984 Olympics.
