SPRING HIGHLIGHTS
Granada Hills 8, Birmingham 5--Mark Kessler, Sean Casey and Dean Yoshitani each had two hits to lead Granada Hills.
Kessler pitched 5 innings and allowed only one hit. Birmingham scored all of its runs off reliever Brett Browning in the seventh.
Agoura 8, Santa Clara 1--Donnie Rea pitched a three-hitter and struck out five to lead Agoura at home. Marty Williams of Agoura was 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs.
San Fernando 3, Kennedy 2--Senior third baseman Frank Zavala was 3 for 3 and drove in the winning run to lead San Fernando at home.
Canyon 4, Quartz Hill 3--Jay Kerschner squeezed home Greg Smith in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Canyon the win at home.
Smith, who had two hits, led off the inning with a double and then stole third. Fred Rivera picked up the win after pitching 3 innings of shutout relief. Dave Leonard had two hits for Quartz Hill.
Murphy 2-7, Bell-Jeff 0-3--Mike Dourisboure of Bell-Jeff pitched a one-hitter, but three walks in the fifth inning cost him the win in the first game. Peter Vandenberg of Murphy had a two-run single and pitched a six-hitter.
In the second game, Murphy trailed, 3-2, but rallied for four runs in the fifth. Murphy’s John Sachi was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Oakwood 14, Queen of Angels 9--Pat Tolley had a home run and four RBIs to lead Oakwood to the win at home.
Canoga Park 12, El Camino Real 9--Mike Urman broke a 9-9 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a three-run homer to give Canoga Park the win at El Camino Real.
Alemany 10, Bosco Tech 2--Mike Rooney struck out nine and did not allow an earned run to lead Alemany to the win at Bosco Tech.
Loyola 2, Crespi 1--Tim Byrne was 2 for 3 and had two RBIs in Loyola’s win at home. Scott Campbell of Crespi hit a solo home run.
Alhambra 10, Hart 5--Two Hart errors in the sixth led to six unearned runs in Alhambra’s win at Hart.
San Gabriel 6, Burroughs (B) 1--San Gabriel scored five unearned runs in the first inning and coasted to the win at home. Burroughs committed seven errors in the inning.
Rick Hoban of Burroughs hit a home run in the sixth. San Gabriel’s Jose Millares was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple.
Providence 4, Crossroads 2--Tony Ross broke a 2-2 tie with a single in the fifth inning to lead Providence to the win at Crossroads.
Jeff Cirillo (8-2) of Providence struck out eight and was 2 for 4.
Santa Ynez 10, Fillmore 9--Bill Watts was 2 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs to lead Santa Ynez to the win at home. Freshman Mike Jamieson had a two-run home run for Santa Ynez.
Village Christian 9, LaVerne Lutheran 5--Jordan Nedeff and Greg Rogers each had two hits to lead Village Christian to the win at LaVerne Lutheran.
Simi Lutheran 14, Coast Christian 1--Jonathan Doering was 4 for 5 and had six RBIs to lead Simi Lutheran to the win at Coast Christian. Bernardo Sanchez was 3 for 4 with three RBIs for Simi Lutheran.
Calabasas 4, Santa Paula 2--David Anzavino pitched his first complete game of the year in the Frontier League game at Calabasas.
Brian Krute and Mike Kurinij led Calabasas with two hits each.
Saugus 12, Burroughs (R) 1--George Aliano struck out two and walked only one while pitching the complete-game victory.
Saugus second baseman Tom Dodson hit a three-run home run in the third inning. Teammates Dennis Moran, Jim Bates and Gene Northway each contributed two hits for the Saugus offense.
With the victory, the Centurions (10-2) remain tied for the Golden League lead with Quartz Hill.
Fairfax 9, North Hollywood 8--Josh Schultz singled in David Kushan in the top of the eighth inning to give Fairfax the win at North Hollywood.
Kushan, a junior first baseman, was 3 for 5 with two home runs, four RBIs and scored three runs.
With the loss, the Huskies (8-4) trail first-place Poly (10-2) by two games.
L.A. Baptist 11, Webb 3--L.A. Baptist hit five home runs in the Alpha League game at Baptist. Senior shortstop Mark MacArthur was 3 for 4 with two home runs and a double. He also had four RBIs. Junior Kirk Petersen (6-2) pitched a complete-game victory for Baptist. He struck out eight and walked only two.
Reseda 6, Cleveland 4--Tony Gilmore scored the winning run on a squeeze bunt by Mike Vanacore in the fifth inning of the West Valley League game at Cleveland.
Montclair Prep 13, Marshall Fundamental 5--Montclair hit four home runs in the Alpha League game at Marshall. Designated hitter Darrell Handelsman was 4 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
With the victory, the Mounties (10-1) maintained their one game league lead over L.A. Baptist.
College Baseball
U.S. International 2, Cal State Northridge 1--Left fielder Ian Kelly hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and U.S. International hung on in a nonconference game in San Diego.
John LaRosa pitched a complete game and allowed five hits in a losing effort for Northridge. The Gulls have won 20 of their last 27 games and are 27-28. CSUN is 19-25.
The Matadors scored their only run in the sixth inning when Craig Burns walked with the bases loaded, forcing home Jim Vatcher.
JC Baseball
Canyons 8, Antelope Valley 5--Canyons used two hits, five walks and an error to score seven runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 4-2 deficit in the Mountain Valley Conference game at Antelope Valley.
Frank Halcovich of Canyons struck out seven and improved his record to 11-0. Antelope Valley’s Jeff Angelo struck out 13 before leaving in the seventh.
The Cougars’ Pete Kuld hit his 13th home run of the season, leaving him three short of the school record with five games left.
Moorpark 13, Santa Barbara 3--Moorpark pounded out 16 hits in a Western State Conference game at Moorpark.
Stacey Kruse and Bob Ayrault led the Moorpark offense. Kruse was 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Ayrault was 2 for 5 with his sixth home run plus a triple and two RBIs. He also pitched the final two innings, striking out five of the six batters he faced.
Valley 11, Mission 5--Chris Haslock led Valley to the Mountain Valley Conference win at Valley.
Haslock, a sophomore center fielder, was 3 for 5 with two home runs, a double and five RBIs. The home runs were his eighth and ninth of the year.
Drew Ricker (8-3) went 6 innings for the win. He walked four and struck out three.
High School Softball
Canoga Park 19, Birmingham 1--De Dow was 6 for 6 and struck out 19 to lead Canoga Park to the win at Birmingham.
Dow, a senior right-hander, is 10-2 and has allowed only one earned run this season. Paula Allen of Canoga Park was 5 for 6 with a home run and five RBIs. Stephanie Wukmir of Canoga Park was 4 for 5 with a home run and six RBIs.
El Camino Real 8, Cleveland 0--Beth Silverman pitched a no-hitter and struck out seven to lead El Camino Real to the win at Cleveland.
Silverman (10-0) also had two hits and drove in two runs. Debbie Onestinghel had a double and two RBIs.
Kennedy 2, Chatsworth 0--Kennedy scored two unearned runs to win at Chatsworth. In the first inning, Krissy Erickson singled and circled the bases on a three-run error in the Chatsworth outfield. In the seventh, Kennedy’s Julie Burley also scored on a single when the Chatsworth outfield misplayed her base hit.
Pauline Madrid pitched a two-hitter for Kennedy.
Burbank 2, Hart 1--Debby Day pitched a four-hitter and had six strikeouts to lead Burbank to the win.
Burbank scored its two runs in the fourth, the second coming on an error by Hart shortstop Sylvia Corralejo. Hart’s Desa Pecel hit a home run in the seventh.
L.A. Baptist 11, Webb 1--Michelle Ruffner pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine to lead L.A. Baptist to the five-inning win at home.
Jenny Yu of L.A. Baptist was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Tracy Torgeson had two hits, including a triple.
Montclair Prep 21, Marshall Fundamental 4--Celeste Grant had three hits and drove in four runs to lead Montclair Prep to the five-inning win at Marshall Fundamental.
Shauna Whitmore of Montclair Prep was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.
Newbury Park 3, Thousand Oaks 1--Debbie Dickmann allowed only two hits and improved her record to 9-2 as Newbury Park won the game at Thousand Oaks.
Newbury Park broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Tracy Schultz. Stacy Frydenberg then drove in Schultz with a single.
Calabasas 2, Santa Paula 1--Carolynn Blake (7-4) pitched her 10th complete game of the year to lead Calabasas to the Frontier league win.
Blake struck out eight. She has struck out 108 batters in the last 11 games.
Viewpoint 18, Pilgrim 17--Pam Bowne doubled in Liesl Dano for the winning run in the bottom of eighth inning to give Viewpoint the victory.
High School Tennis
North Hollywood 6, Fairfax 1--Bruce Osterman, Mike Downey and Howard Minkow won singles matches to lead North Hollywood to the win.
Chatsworth 5, Taft 2--Larry Peerl of Chatsworth defeated Jon Holiday to lead the Chancellors to the win.
