Helen Hayes Awards to ‘Iceman,’ ‘Cage’
WASHINGTON — “The Iceman Cometh” and “La Cage aux Folles” have taken top honors in the 1986 Helen Hayes Awards at the National Theatre.
In presentations made Monday night, “Iceman” won the award for the outstanding production bound for New York, while Jason Robards, who starred in the production, received the honor for outstanding lead actor and Barnard Hughes was selected best supporting performer in a touring production.
“La Cage” was selected as best touring production.
Two locally originated productions, “March of the Falsettos” and “Metamorphosis” by Ralph Hunt, won honors for the best resident musical and outstanding new play, respectively.
Barbara Robertson, star of “Kabuki Medea,” was chosen as outstanding lead actress in a touring production bound for New York.
The Helen Hayes Awards were founded in October, 1983, to recognize outstanding achievement in Washington professional theater in both resident and touring productions. Hayes was born in the District of Columbia 85 years ago.
